Understanding Modes of Delivery
Every pregnancy and birth is unique. The way a baby is born depends on many factors, including the health of the parent and baby, the progress of labour, and personal preferences. Your healthcare team will discuss options with you and help you make decisions that feel right for you and your family.
Below, youβll find resources to learn more about the different modes of delivery and what to expect with each one.
Vaginal Birth
The most common mode of delivery is a spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD). This happens when the baby is born through the vagina. It is important to be prepared for the possibility of an assisted vaginal birth or a cesarean section in the event of an emergency.

Assisted Vaginal Birth
Sometimes, assistance is needed to help the baby come out safely through the vagina, using a vacuum or forceps. Assisted vaginal births are done to support a healthy delivery for both parent and baby when labor isnβt progressing or the baby needs help during birth.

Cesarean Section (C-Section)
A cesarean section is a surgical birth done through an incision in the abdomen and uterus. It may be planned in advance or done urgently if needed for the safety of the parent or baby.

Removal of Fallopian Tubes (Bilateral Salpingectomy) for Family Planning
For individuals who are certain they do not wish to have more children, removal of both fallopian tubes (bilateral salpingectomy) may be offered, often at the time of a cesarean section. This procedure provides permanent contraception and can also lower the risk of ovarian cancer by 65%.
